We purchased our apartment in Chamonix, France in 2000 and decided to sell it in 2015 with a reasonably significant profit. We were advised by our estate agent in Chamonix that in addition to the expected Capital Gains Tax assessment to be paid, that a further assessment for French Social Tax would also be raised. We later learned that the European Court of Justice had ruled it was contrary to European Law for such taxes to be retained for owners who resided in other EU Member states. However, we were advised at the time of the sale that the tax had to be paid and then reclaimed from the French Government. We therefore investigate in the UK whether it would be better to use a UK based advisor or a French based advisor. Our research led us to the Legal Consulting firm Francophile Legal Consulting, who we contacted and discussed our situation with Loic Raboteau, International Legal Advisor and Director. He advised that we would need to provide appropriate information and once a claim had been submitted and accepted, a refund would be made a few months later. This proved to be 100% accurate and we are now delighted to have received full refund of the Social Taxes that had been paid.
